May 23 Abkhazian Orthodox Christians revere the memory of the Holy Apostle Simon the Zealot

Day of the Holy Apostle Simon the Zealot - one of the main spring holidays in Abkhaz Orthodox Church after Easter.

"This is a very important and a great holiday for the whole Abkhazia, because the apostle Simon the Zealot – educator of Abkhazia. We must honor the memory of his educator. He preached here and taught the people martyred for Christ. said Father Athanasius.

The Holy Apostle Simon - one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ, his half-brother. Apostle Simon the Zealot, or often called Zealot.

Together with the other apostles, he went out to preach the Gospel of Christ. It is known that the apostle Simon, together with Apostle Andrew preached in Abkhazia. Saint Andrew  preached along the Black Sea coast.

St. Simon about 55 CE. e. He settled in a cave in the vicinity of the modern New Athos. In the gorge of the river Psyrtsha apostle was martyred. According to legend, back in I century near the cave of St. Simon scored a healing source that still exists today.

Above the burial place of the Apostle erected a temple in his honor
